Aliens to Science

I don't know how many of you have read Sylvia Plath's "Beware: Do Not Read This Poem,"  but the current research efforts for the Bosnian Valley of the Pyramids  could be its subject.  Like the poem's mirror, things are interesting and scary and have the characteristics of a dangerous creature with a devouring and all-consuming appetite.  The Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun project opened as a horror movie, with all Bosnian scientists and so-called professors ambushing Mr. Semir Osmanagic just as the angry mob of villagers attacked the poem's protagonist.

Aliens to Science and the Professors of Archaeology and Geology Opposition

Act I:   Beware: do not get confused

Opposition for the project came from characters made up of both Bosnian scientists and professors from universities in Tuzla and Sarajevo, those who have never even stepped foot in Visoko, as well as bit characters alien to true scientific advancement.  Let's back up for a moment, and ask ourselves what is really behind this:  aims for advancement in science and academia; or politics and ego?

Personally, I was shocked to encounter so much resistance and hatred when I first became involved in this project in 2006.  Mr. Osmanagic had discovered the world's largest pyramids located in the heart of Bosnia, an existence noted Egyptian geologist Dr. Barakat confirmed.  A logical person may suppose that the Egyptians are the best experts on pyramids most obviously because Egypt is the established country of the pyramids.

Personally, I have conducted a series of interviews with the local Bosnian characters of opposition which include the geologists from local Tuzla University and Professor Vrabac; and they could not give me straight answers to questions such as who conducted their analyses in order to come to conclusions that the structures in Visoko are natural hills.  I spoke to two University sources who told me that pith samples were sitting for weeks in their lab with not one person bothering to look at them. In our interview, Professor Vrabac told me that Dr. Ali Barakat (Egyptian geologist who personally spent 42 days investigating and researching the Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun and its tunnels) could not possibly make his conclusions regarding this terrain if conducting them on the scene; rather he must be in the laboratories.  I asked professor Vrabac what type of analyses they conducted at their university, and he responded that they needed no lab analyses since so many PhD and Masters Dissertations had previously been written regarding those "hills" in Visoko.

One may find it quite amazing that a character such as Prof. Vrabac would contact Dr. Swelim-a three-time Doctorate and discoverer of four Egyptian pyramids-with the goal of intimidating Dr. Swelim and by telling him that he personally knows best. But the intimidation didn't stop there.  They also attempted to intimidate Dr. Barakat by writing and telling him that he has no clue what geology actually is.  It is rather interesting that Vrabac would have this attitude and claim his expertise in the area given the fact that he doesn't even know where Gornje Vratnice (where suspected stone shrine in the Visoko Valley) is located.  I asked Professor Vrabac what he thought about this particular stone structure, and he stated "I have never heard of it. I don't know what you are talking

about "  In Bosnia-a claimed expert on that area?  Quite astonishing!

Professor Blogoje Govedarica -an archaeologist who also claims to be an expert in that area-has never stepped foot in Visoko, yet has found the courage to harass and to attempt intimidation toward Dr. Swelim.   This harassment occurred via fax and email over the course of several weeks, not to mention his continuously composing vulgar blogs along with his associates over the past two years to the present.  One may wonder what his motive really is-science or personal hatred toward the Egyptian experts and Mr. Osmanagic?

These professors of opposition have recruited Mr. Vuk Bacanovic, a 22-year old gossip magazine "journalist" (Dani Magazine), to write false and untrue articles in which he calls Swelim "senile" and a "fool."  While Bacanovic falsely informs his readers, he also writes anti-Osmanagic blogs.  One may ponder how objective and professional Bacanovic may be given his inclinations to use vulgar words and profanity when blogging and composing emails about Dr. Barakat and Dr. Swelim. Now, American journalists such as Colin Woodard and John Bohannon have also joined this opposition and published false articles about Mr. Osmanagic.  Woodard referred to Visoko as a nationalistic enclave of the Bosnian Muslims and seemingly tried to connect Mr. Osmanagic to such as a nationalistic movement as well.  He falsely claimed that Dr. Barakat and Dr. Schoch measured the pyramids and concluded that they fail to perfectly align with the cardinal points.  The truth is that the Geodetic Institute of Bosnia-Herzegovina conducted its own analysis and found that they did in fact align with the cardinal points.  Barakat and Schoch, however, never measured those hills themselves as Woodard wrote.  Woodard himself also attempted to intimidate Dr. Swelim and had the audacity to email the definition of "pyramid."  Bohannon, who writes for the prominent Science magazine,  was also an author of false articles that were so bizarre they do not even merit mention.  How, it may occur to one, does Bohannon come to write for such a well-respected and prominent magazine devoted to scientific fact while all information he gathers comes directly from the gossip journalist Bacanovic?  Not surprisingly, Woodard does the same.

However, the story of these flawed characters does not end here.  Dr. Collette Dowell, also a visitor to Bosnia with Dr. Schoch, claimed "the hills are just the hills, not the pyramids" and is currently also writing blogs both untrue and full of hatred, comparing Osmanagic to Hitler. Personally, I have spoken to Dario Pekic (the owner of the Pyramid of the Sun Hotel, where Dr. Dowell stayed), and he complained to me about Dowell's "devious" activities.  Mr. Pekic stated to the Foundation's members, including Osmanagic, that such people as Dowell would not be welcome to his hotel anymore as she was sexually harassing members of his staff-the women, in particular.  It was hard to believe at first that Dowell would engage in such appalling behavior. Two female staff members, however, informed me that towards the end of her stay they were afraid to come near her.  It brings to question her mental stability, even further when one takes into consideration her alleged abduction and ensuing impregnation by, again, alleged aliens.  Which brings us back to Schoch...how stable and solid is the intellect of one who chooses to keep close to his side someone like Dowell as a personally-acclaimed colleague and assistant in the field?

The story of the aforementioned opponents drags on and on and on....and to the dismay of the audience does not end with just these characters.  As the drama unfolds, we also meet another cast of characters:  Paul Heinrich (Louisiana State University, USA), Professor Enver Imamovic (Sarajevo University), Professor Anthony Harding (UK), and Professor Predrag Novakovic (Slovenia).  These last two characters visited the Bosnian Pyramid of the Sun together; while Harding recalls the visit as being two hours, Novakovic is certain it was thirty minutes.  The truth is that they both spent only 15 minutes in the dusk hours visiting the site; in the immediate moments following this visit, they told tales of the entire Valley site being merely a bunch of hills.

A logical mind can read between the lines and deduce the bit parts that make up the whole of the "angry mob villagers" (professors of opposition and those alien to the true scientific goals here), as Plath once warned her own readers to stand clear of the hysteria.

Beware:  do not fail to see the bigger picture. And stay away from aliens.

End Scene.
