A laboratory session screened some 250 rocks retrieved from the access section of Ravne Tunnels. To re-cap- Ravne Tunnels is a labyrinth of passageways and filled in side tunnels covering an enormous area. We have removed filler material to reveal approx 800meters of tunnels. The mysteries surrounding Ravne include- What were the tunnels for, Who built them in the distant past, Why did the ‘builders’ go to an extensive effort to fill in hundreds of side tunnels, construct substantial dry walls to seal them and then vanish? Ultimately we anticipate the tunnels will lead to the Pyramid of the Sun as ‘tunnels’ are a feature of pyramid architecture around the World.
Last week we entered a section which produced some very interesting items. We recovered a lot of stone and rock that appears to have been culturally modified. In addition we uncovered the strange ‘egg’ which is explained in an earlier post below. Here is a small sampling of stones that have been retained for further examination. At first glance they may not appear too interesting, but to an archaeologist they contain information to be teased out, modifications, markings, repeating symmetry, etc. The real challenge in assessing this material is the context of the finds, within compact conglomerate dated to 30,000+ya!
